CVOR
A CVOR (Commercial Vehicle Operator's Registration) is the safety registration Ontario requires of carriers running commercial trucks in the province, including U.S. and Mexican carriers. The province uses it to track each operator's safety record.
Ontario's Ministry of Transportation issues the CVOR certificate. Trucks plated in Ontario, the U.S. or Mexico with a registered or actual gross weight above 4,500 kg need one to operate in the province; trucks plated in another Canadian province use that province's safety certificate instead. Collisions, convictions and inspection results are recorded against the CVOR, and a poor record can lead to sanctions or loss of the registration.
Other provinces run their own safety programs, but because so much U.S.-Canada freight moves through Ontario, the CVOR is the one out-of-province carriers most often need.
What this means when you move freight
For Canada-bound freight that enters or passes through Ontario, confirm the carrier holds a valid CVOR before booking, just as you would check U.S. operating authority. A carrier without one can be placed out of service at a roadside inspection, stranding the load.
