Open deck in three countries

Carriers based in Mexico, the U.S. and Canada declare open deck equipment, and open deck freight is posted in all three. What carriers run differs by country:

  • Mexico: 48-foot and 53-foot flatbeds and flatbed doubles. Step deck and Conestoga loads are posted and bid on.
  • U.S.: flatbeds, step decks, Conestogas and double drops.
  • Canada: flatbeds, step decks and Conestogas. Multi-axle flatbeds are a Canada-only type, with loads posted there.

Steel and metals and machinery post for a mix of trailers, while building materials go mostly in dry vans; each group moves inside all three countries and both ways across both U.S. borders. On the Mexico border, open deck freight is posted through Laredo, Pharr, Brownsville, Eagle Pass, Del Rio, El Paso, Nogales, San Luis, Calexico East and Otay Mesa. Carriers with open deck equipment also list Douglas and Tecate among their crossings.

RGN and double drop

Double drops, lowboys and RGNs have their own page, with the heavy-deck decision table. In short: carriers run double drops in the U.S., and RGN loads are posted and bid on, so confirm the gooseneck with the carrier that wins.

Oversize, overweight and heavy haul

Carriers in all three countries declare that they take oversize and overweight loads, and the app ties both load types to open deck trailers. That is a declaration about the load type, not a permit. Carrier profiles have no field for oversize permits or pilot cars, so settle who arranges them before you accept a bid.

Mark the load oversize or overweight on the posting. Suggested carriers are not tagged for either, so ask the carrier directly about your dimensions and weight. Hazmat is declared separately and has its own page.

Curtainside and end dump

The app has no curtainside or end-dump trailer type. The closest to a curtainside is a Conestoga, which carriers run in the U.S. and Canada. For an end dump, describe the load in the posting and confirm with the carrier before you accept.

What open deck loads ask for

A posting can call for straps, chains, tarps, and blocking and bracing in all three countries. Coil racks and edge protectors are asked for on U.S. and Canadian loads, and ramps on U.S. and Mexican loads. These are asks on the load, not certifications on a profile, so confirm the gear with the carrier before pickup.

How a broker reaches open deck capacity on Cargado

Post the load with every open deck type it can use: flatbed, step deck, Conestoga, double drop or RGN. Allowing two or three widens the pool; allowing one the freight cannot use only brings bids you will turn down. Mark it oversize or overweight if it is, and list the securement. Open deck carriers whose saved searches, service areas or open trucks match are notified and bid. Suggested carriers show why they were picked, not which deck they run, so confirm the trailer and its rated weight with each bidder. An "Available truck" reason means the carrier posted an open truck of one of your deck types near your pickup. Cargado does not take a cut.
