SENTRI

SENTRI

SENTRI is CBP's trusted traveler program for expedited personal entry into the U.S. by land from Mexico, using dedicated lanes for pre-vetted travelers in private vehicles. It does not cover commercial freight; the commercial driver equivalent is the FAST card.

Compliance

SENTRI, the Secure Electronic Network for Travelers Rapid Inspection, is a CBP trusted traveler program that gives pre-vetted, low-risk travelers expedited processing in dedicated lanes when entering the United States by land, primarily on the southern border. Applicants pass a background check and interview, and enrollment covers registered private vehicles.

SENTRI is for people, not freight. A truck hauling cargo cannot use a SENTRI lane; the commercial counterpart is the FAST card, which works with the CTPAT chain on commercial crossings.

What this means when you move freight

Even though it moves no cargo, SENTRI matters to cross-border freight people more than you would guess. Border-based logistics staff cross constantly: dispatchers checking on yards, customs brokers' teams shuttling documents, account managers visiting maquiladora customers, carrier owners managing operations on both sides. For anyone whose week includes multiple personal crossings at Laredo, El Paso, Otay Mesa, or the Valley bridges, SENTRI converts unpredictable multi-hour waits into a manageable commute, and that reliability shows up in how fast border problems get solved in person. If you are building a border operation, budget the enrollment for your binational staff early. And keep the two programs straight in conversation: SENTRI for personal crossings, FAST for the drivers hauling your loads.
