ACE / ACI eManifest
ACE and ACI eManifest are the U.S. and Canadian systems through which truck carriers send shipment, driver and truck data to customs before arriving at the border. Both require the manifest at least one hour before arrival; ACE allows 30 minutes for FAST.
ACE (Automated Commercial Environment) is CBP's trade system; its truck e-manifest carries the conveyance, driver, equipment and shipment details for every load entering the U.S. by truck. ACI (Advance Commercial Information) eManifest is the CBSA's equivalent for trucks entering Canada. In both systems the carrier, or a service provider acting for it, transmits the manifest, and each shipment is linked to the customs entry filed by the importer's broker through a PAPS or PARS number.
What this means when you move freight
The manifest is the carrier's responsibility, and a missing or late one means the truck is refused or held regardless of whether the customs entry is ready. When booking a carrier for northbound or Canada-bound freight, confirm it can transmit the right manifest itself or through a provider, and that the driver's details in the manifest match the driver actually assigned.
