Choose Transfer by carrier when the carrier you book will cross the freight. Choose Pre-set transfer when someone else already has the crossing, such as your customer, their customs broker or a transfer carrier you already use. Transfer by carrier is the default.

Where the question appears

Who handles the border crossing? sits in the Border Crossing section of the posting form, and you must answer it. The section appears when the route includes Mexico and another country, the U.S. or Canada. It does not appear on a route between only the U.S. and Canada. To pick the port, see Which border crossing should I put on a posting?

Transfer by carrier

The carrier you book handles the crossing, so their bid includes it. The posting tells carriers Carrier handles border crossing. On a bid, the rate breakdown can show how the carrier plans to run the crossing, for example B1 driver or Crossing partner carrier & CDL driver.

Pre-set transfer

Someone other than the carrier you book handles the crossing. The carrier does not price the crossing itself. Their bid covers the rest of the route. The posting shows Pre-set transfer with the note No transloading allowed unless permission given in writing.

Northbound loads: No B1 drivers

When the posting picks up in Mexico, Pre-set transfer reads Pre-set transfer - No B1 drivers, both on your form and on the posting carriers see. Carriers that run northbound freight with B1 drivers cannot use them on this load.

On a load that picks up in the U.S. or Canada and heads into Mexico, the notice does not appear.

Tip: Ask the shipper who crosses before you post. If nobody has the crossing yet, Transfer by carrier puts it in the bid of the carrier you book.

Transloading at the border

If the freight changes trailers at the border, see Post flatbed, oversize, power-only and other special moves for how to post it.

Changing it later

The crossing is part of the freight details. To change it on a live posting, open the freight and choose Edit freight details. Cargado asks you to take the posting down first. Taking it down closes every existing bid, and you cannot accept those bids afterward. Post it again when you are done.
